a poem

I'm just now getting around to celebrating National Poetry Month and I thought I'd do that by sharing some poems that I've written.

Here's one from 2011:

metaphor

The first day
on my walk
I saw a bluejay sleeping
bright and blue and perfect
nestled in the emerald grass

The second day
it swelled
feathers ruffled
color blue as the fairest sky
eyes black and intact

The third day
the sun was hot
a maggot crawled across the wing
colors softly fading
into its grassy bed

Today the perfume of magnolias
blanketed the stench
eyes were hollow with decay
color dull and gray
disintegrating into the fertile earth
