happy endings

So far I've gotten two reviews on my book that are what I would call "critical," which I suppose is a nice way of saying negative. Both of them stated that the ending of the book was disappointing.

I don't want to give away the ending to the book, but I will say that there's a sequel and that not every story has a happy ending. Mountains Wanted may not have the exact ending that readers want, but I don't think it's entirely a sad ending. Anyone who thinks so needs to go back and re-read the last page.

I think the best romances to read are the ones where you want the main characters to be together so badly that it hurts. And before that happens there are usually some "two steps forward, three steps back" type maneuvers, you know? One literary romance that inspired me was Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe in the Anne of Green Gables series. Just when you think they won't ever be together...they are. Maybe it will be like that for James and Sarah too? Or maybe they will find their happiness in the arms of others?

So I'm curious, as a reader, do you want everything you read to have a happy ending? Are you disappointed when the ending isn't happy? Does it matter if you know there is a sequel?

  1. Knowing there is a sequel is helping me with your book, which I finished this morning. And I want HEA endings to romantic stories.

  4. I always say that I don't like impossible love stories.. Or should I say, stories of impossible love...because maybe I was once the one left.. As Sarah did at the end of the book..
